Dependent Visa (F-3)


For Korean descendants, please check if everything regarding your nationality is cleared before you apply for visa.

Even if a person was born in the U.S., he/she might have been inherited Korean citizenship from parents since birth.

We need additional documents for Korean descendants.

Eligible Applicants

- Spouse and minor children of a person who holds one of the following visa types:

1.Holders of visas such as Culture and Arts (D-1), Student (D-2), Specific Activities (D-7), Resident (F-2), Overseas Korean (F-4), or Working Visit (H-2)
2.Family members of Overseas Koreans (F-4 visa holders) may apply for a multiple-entry Dependent Visa (F-3-19) valid for 1 year.



How to Apply

- In-person application: Reservation required → Make a reservation

- Eligible for mail-in application:
Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Missouri, Indiana, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota,
Illinois (excluding Chicago suburbs and downtown)
- Not eligible for mail-in application:
Chicago suburbs and downtown → In-person application only





How to Receive Your Documents

- Eligible for mail return: Same as the mail-in application areas above → Must provide a prepaid, trackable return envelope

- Not eligible for mail return: Chicago suburbs and downtown → Pick-up in person only



Required Documents

** If applying for multiple people, submit a separate attachment for each applicant.


1.[Attached] Visa Application Form (Form No. 17)


2.One Passport-size Photo (2"x2", color, front-facing, no hats/sunglasses, taken within 6 months; scanned or copied photos not accepted)

3.Original Passport + One Copy of Photo Page

Must be valid for more than 6 months

Notarized copy is not accepted as an alternative for the actual passport


4.Proof of residency
Copy of driver’s license or most recent utility bill/bank statement
Applicants must be a current resident of one of the following states to submit their application to the Korean Consulate General in Chicago:
Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Missouri, Indiana, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, and North Dakota

5.If you are not a U.S. citizen:
- U.S. Green Card holders
(In-person) Bring original and copy (original will be returned after verification)
(By mail) Submit notarized copy only (do not mail original)
 

- U.S. Visa holders:
F visa: Copy of visa + I-20
J visa: Copy of visa + DS-2019
H visa: Copy of visa + I-797
OPT: Submit original EAD card + copy
If U.S. visa stamp is expired: Submit appointment confirmation from U.S. Embassy
If Green Card is expired: Submit original I-797 and expired Green Card (notarized copy by mail)

6.Fee:
- $45 for U.S. citizens (Money Order or cash for in-person)
- For other nationalities, [Click here] or contact the Visa Section
- Pay to: Korean Consulate General
- Note: Non-refundable, even if application is withdrawn or denied

7.Prepaid return envelope (with tracking)
- Clearly write recipient’s name and address
- Use a secure method (e.g., USPS Express or Certified Mail)
- The consulate is not responsible for mail loss
- If you wish to receive your visa and passport in person, please inform the officer that you would like to collect them yourself.

No mail delivery is available for residents of downtown Chicago or nearby suburbs. Pick-up only.


8.Proof of Family Relationship 
- Marriage certificate, birth certificate, or other official records

9.Proof of Financial Support (To be submitted by the inviter)
- Sponsor’s certificate of employment, tax payment certificate, or bank statements

10.Proof of Residence in Korea (Lease agreement, etc.)
 Documents 9 and 10 are waived for applicants holding E-1 (Professor), E-3 (Research), E-4 (Technical Instructor), or E-5 (Professional) visas.


11.[Attached] Letter of Guarantee (If applying for multiple people, submit a separate attachment for each applicant.)


12.Inviter's Visa Grant Notice or other document showing the inviter visa status and duration of stay

13.(If applicable) For F-4 dependent visa applicants:
- Submit the sponsor’s Korean Residence Card (Domestic Sojourn Card(국내거소카드)) or Visa Grant Notice, and F-4 visa holder's passport copy




* If needed, additional documents may be requested during the review process

* Submitted documents will not be returned except for original passport and permanent resident card(In person: Bring physical green card and copy, or notarized copy by mail)
